The Myth of Blind Bats
The misconception that bats are blind likely stems from their nocturnal lifestyle and their preference for dark habitats such as caves. However, contrary to popular belief, the majority of bats are not blind; they possess functional eyes and are capable of sight, although the quality of their vision varies across different species. While some bat species have relatively small eyes and rely heavily on echolocation to navigate and hunt in low-light conditions, others have well-developed eyesight.
The perpetuation of the myth may be attributed to the association of bats with darkness and nighttime activities. Yet, like any other species, bats have evolved to adapt to their environments, employing a range of sensory abilities to thrive. While their vision may not be as sharp as diurnal animals, it is inaccurate to categorize bats as blind creatures.
